Center Stage Awards participants practice their Do-Re-Mi

The Center Stage High School Musical Theater Awards recognizes productions and the amazing talent in high school performances in Northeast Wisconsin. It also is designed to be an enriching and educational opportunity for participating students to engage in the arts.

Through workshops with touring artists, students have the opportunity to explore careers in the arts, learn what it takes to audition and land the role of their dreams, stay healthy as a performer and make the arts a permanent and impactful part of their life.

Recently, 27 students joined Donna Garner, who was part of the cast for The Sound of Music, for a vocal master class. After leading warmups, Garner discussed the importance of recognizing your voice’s own strengths and weaknesses, finding and developing your unique routine as a performer to make sure you are ready to do your best. She led students through warmups, explaining how to work your voice and how to make your voice work for you by shifting vowels or your mindset to make difficult sounds easier.

Garner then let the students lead. As they asked questions about tough pieces they are working on or how to impress at their next audition, Garner used examples and interactive warmups to help answer each question.
“Try everything,” she said, referring to styles of music. “Listen to everything. You are on the verge of doing whatever you want to do so try everything and do or perform as much as you can.”

The next workshop will be an acting workshop with a cast member from The Bodyguard. We would like to thank our workshop partner Schneider National.
