No, it’s not THAT Mike McCarthy…this one is one fourth of The Irish Comedy Tour, stopping by the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, March 14, just enough in time to get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. He took a break from the group’s tour to give us a taste of what we can expect at the show.
1. How did you get interested in comedy?
When I was 19 I went to a show and the host walked on stage at 9 p.m. and said “Bear with me, I just woke up…” and I knew I had found my true calling.
2. How did you get involved with The Irish Comedy Tour?
I did an Irish themed show for Derek Richards about twelve years ago and the response was so positive that he decided to put a tour together. I've been here since day one. I met Derrick Keane (our guitar player) in jail and Damon (our fiddle player) in rehab.
3. What is your favorite part about St. Patrick’s Day?
The fact that is the easiest holiday to celebrate. You wake up and start drinking BOOM you’re done! Want extra credit? Boil some meat in beer and when you’re hammered it's done! It really is the best holiday, no presents to buy, no turkey to cook, no eggs to hide, do you know what a nightmare Easter is for an alcoholic with two children? Every year I hide the eggs the night before and then the next morning I forget where they are. We just moved and found an egg from 1999. Not pretty.
4. What’s your favorite part about traveling performing with three other funny men?
Not the smell I'll tell you that. We spend weeks in a van together and it gets pretty ripe. I still gag when I think of the Skyline Chili indecent of 2012. All kidding aside it's the camaraderie. This is the best lineup we've ever had and we really are like brothers traveling across the country laughing our heads off telling jokes, playing music and getting paid for it. We truly are lucky and we know it.
5. What can audiences expect when they come to see the show?
Mayhem pure unadulterated mayhem! This show is the best thing I have ever been a part of, the other guys are super talented and it is such a unique blend of comedy and music. It's a fun night of Irish tunes, Irish jokes and Irish car bombs. (That is a joke, no one NO ONE in the group drinks car bombs, "Drink it quick before it curdles!" Nah I'm good Buddy, we'll stick to whiskey.)
6. (Finish the sentence) I’m most excited to visit Appleton because I hear…
The statute of limitations has expired for all the things we did last time we were there. Buckle up Wisconsin it's on like a Drunken Leprechaun!
