Experience the spirit of South Africa with Soweto Gospel Choir – PEACE

October 20, 2025
"Every time we step on stage, we carry the voices, rhythms, and stories of our people with us.”
Vincent Jiyane, Soweto Gospel Choir

Since its founding in 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Soweto Gospel Choir has celebrated the rich heritage and diverse cultures of their homeland through song, dance, and storytelling. The choir was created not only to entertain but to honor the traditions, faiths, and musical roots of South Africa’s many tribes. Each performance is a vibrant reflection of this cultural tapestry, carrying forward the rhythms, harmonies, and languages that tell the story of a nation.

The Choir’s sound is deeply rooted in traditional gospel music, drawing from the diverse tribal backgrounds across South Africa. But their performances are more than music, they are living expressions of culture. By singing in their native languages and incorporating rhythms born from centuries of tradition, the Choir preserves and shares the history, struggles, and celebrations of the South African people.

Visual storytelling is central to the Soweto Gospel Choir experience. Their dynamic choreography and colorful costumes do more than dazzle the audience, they reinforce the music’s emotional impact. Dance and dress have long been part of South African expression, and every movement and color choice carries meaning. Watching their choreography is like witnessing the heartbeat of the music come alive.

Their upcoming PEACE show at your Fox Cities Performing Arts Center on November 6 promises an especially powerful cultural experience. The Choir hopes to convey themes of unity, healing, and hope, reminding audiences that peace begins within, in the ways we love, forgive and understand one another. The Choir’s commitment to community extends beyond the stage through the Nkosi’s Haven/Vukani Foundation, providing both hope and inspiration.

For the Soweto Gospel Choir, every performance is an opportunity to act as ambassadors of South Africa’s spirit. They bring the resilience, diversity and joy of their culture to the global stage, blending traditional and modern expressions to create a uniquely captivating sound. Returning to the Center nearly 20 years after their first performance in 2005, the Choir promises to deliver the same passion and joy that audiences remember.
