1.) It’s award season!
The Drama League has announced their ceremony will be streamed on May 21, recognizing digital theater excellence released in the last year.
The 2021 Critics' Choice Award film nominations are in, and many theater stars have been recognized for their work including August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Amazon's One Night in Miami including Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. and recognition for other Tony winners including Frances McDormand, Glenn Close, Ellen Burstyn and Ruben Santiago-Hudson.
Nominations have been announced for the 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Broadway alums and stage-to-screen adaptations were among those honored. Read the full list here.
Music from some familiar names in Broadway was deemed eligible for Oscar nominations and nominations will be announced on March 15.
The Golden Globes also recognized some theater favorites.
2.) Movie Musicals add to creative team
Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights film director Jon M. Chu has been tapped to helm the film version of the smash-hit Broadway musical Wicked.
The Some Like It Hot Musical is planning a 2022 Broadway Bow and has announced Emmy-nominated scribe Amber Ruffin will join The Inheritance's Tony-nominated playwright Matthew López in adapting the MGM movie for the stage. As previously reported, Casey Nicholaw is still set to direct the musical, which features a score by Tony-winning Hairspray songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
3.) Come From Away filmed for a fall release
The hit Broadway musical Come From Away is set to be filmed. Entertainment One (eOne) has announced it will produce and finance a live filming of the musical to be released in September 2021. Filming will take place in May at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, where the Broadway show plays.
4.) A new Wizard of Oz film is just down the yellow brick road
A new film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz is in the works. Nicole Kassell is directing a new adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for New Line Cinema. More information, including additional creative team and casting, will be announced later.
