1. One year without live performances
Exactly a year ago this in March, Broadway shut down due to the growing COVID-19 crisis. Performers Darius Barnes, Ryan Breslin, Holly Ann Butler, Stephen Carrasco, Katie Lombardo, Robin Masella, Tomás Matos, Skyler Volpe and Aléna Watters created this stunning video to mark the day.
2. Broadway inches closer to reopening
With a call from New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio saying they will “move heaven and earth” to get Broadway back, there has been clear movement on and off Broadway to prepare for reopening.
NY PopsUp programs have begun at some Broadway theaters, opening their doors for special performances with specific safety plans as a pilot program with the goal of increasing audience size and testing protocols over time.
The Green Room 42 has also announced a lineup of upcoming live events featuring Broadway favorites.
Off-Broadway, The Office! A Musical Parody is working toward reopening in April and Blindness (from The West End) will open Off-Broadway with socially-distanced seating.
DIANA, the bio-musical that was in the middle of previews when the pandemic hit, announced it will return beginning December 1. It will also become the first Broadway musical to premiere on Netflix before officially opening when the filmed musical hits the streaming service on October 1.
3. Awards
You oughta know! Jagged Little Pill took home the 2021 Best Musical Theater Album Grammy. The Critics Choice Awards also honored Broadway favorites including Leslie Odom Jr., Hamilton on Disney+ and August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.
The Drama League has also announced its 2021 nominees, focusing on the extraordinary digital theatrical productions released during the COVID-19 pandemic and identify those that made an impact in the last year. See the full list here.
4. In the works…
The In The Heights film released two new trailers, announced it would be released a week early and shared that a book is in the works!
Lin Manuel-Miranda music will also be featured in Walt Disney Animation Studios' previously announced Encanto, now set to debut November 24.
The Devil Wears Prada musical added another writer to its team ahead of its planned 2022 debut in Chicago. The Mystic Pizza Musical will perform in Maine this summer featuring music composed by Melissa Ethridge.
Also, just announced, The Queens Gambit musical adaptation is in the works!
